Just a guess ...it may be related to the Basques, or possibly to a cup or holder, similar to the English 'flask' ...I would suspect if this was the case, it would refer to someone who made them ...I lean towards the Basque meaning though ...but then again, I'll defer to anyone with a bit more knowledge of Spanish ...

It is a variant of Vasco. It derives from a bask word that means "wild" "basa" in the bask language.
Originally this surname has nothing to do with the name of the people, the Basks.

I've heard different:
Vasquez is Vasco+ez. This may mean either '(son) of Vasco', or 'from Vasco', where Vasco means 'the Bask country'. A third origin of this surname is said to be occupational: 'sheppard'. see http://genealogy.about.com/library/surnames/v/bl_name-VASQUEZ.htm or http://home.att.net/~Alsosa/surnames.htm or again 'VÁSQUEZ
Son of Vasco, or one who came from the Basque country; one who tended sheep; a shepherd; dweller at the sign of the raven.' see http://ivc.uidaho.edu/flesmethods/spanishsurnames.html

That last meaning could be the result of a mix-up. It is also the meaning of Corbet: (English, French. Irish) 'Dweller at the sign of the raven'. Seems a bit strange to me, two names with such a meaning.
