Meaning of Surname BREBURDA
I have ancestors whose surname was BREBURDA. They lived in Bohemia, now the Czech Republic. No one seems to know the ancestry or meaning of this name. Now I've found there is a region in Romania called BREBU. Could "Breburda" have been derived from BREBU? I have found out that some German-Bohemians settled in this region. Also, BREBU was a Jewish Shetl at one time. Any connection? Any information would be appreciated.Thank you.

Hello Betty,
Could you contact me @ osudy(AT)hotmail.com re BREBURDA?
My gt grandmother’s line from Kovarovice near Pysely overlaps with
the Breburda’s who still live around Pysely. Gt grandmother’s older
brothers (born 1850-1858) and a related family (yours?) left for the
US and were never heard of again. Breburda is derived from the name
of a mediaeval weapon like a lance - burdyr. The Breburda name
occurs among the Catholic Church listings for Pysely parish, Kovarovice
hamlet, okres Jilove around 1850-1880 alongside listings for my own
relatives.
Cheers Yvonne
