Bogardus?
Does anyone know what this name means? It's the surname of a kid in several of my classes. It is pron. bo-GAHR-dus. I don't know anything else about it.

This is a latinised form of the Dutch surname Bogaart/Bogaert. It's what I call a snob name, "I'm educated, I know Latin". Bogaart is said to come from an old Germanic name Borghardt, like the German Burkhardt. Otherwise it might be a corruption of boomgaard, "orchard".
