Judge

Hi there! Can anyone tell me anything about the surname Judge? One of my ancestors was named Michael Judge and he was born in Ireland in 1808, we believe in northern or north western Ireland. I know of another Judge, also named Michael, who was born in County Leitrim. Is Judge a very common name in Ireland? It doesn't SOUND Irish, but I know of two Judges and they were both from there. If anyone knows anything about the name, I'd be very grateful. Thank you in advance! :o)

Many Irish names were translated to their English meaning. Judge in Irish is Mac an Bhreithiún (son of the judge which also appears in the name Breheny ...judges were very important in Ancient Ireland and they had a very advanced judicial system ... known as Brehonic Law
