If it is Irish, it's probably related to "Bergin" which is numerous in Dublin and the Midlands. It would be Ó h-Aimheirgin or Ó Beirgin. They were a family originally from County Laois that is still extant in their native territory. Aimheirgin is a legendary name meaning “born of song” and belonged to Ireland’s first poet. It could be Irish, O Beirgin. You might consider also the English surname Birkin, from a Yorkshire place name meaning "birch trees".
