Acuña
i'm familiar with the origins of my last name to an extent, but i was hoping to gather some clarification.i know the last name "Acuña" is spanish, and in the spanish language the verb "acuñar" means "to mint coins."i was wondering if anyone knew anything on a further background and if it's fair to say that the entymology behind that name was in the same way as "Farmer" or "Smith" in that the name dictated a heritage of what the nameholder's profession was. thank you!

Apparently this originated as a Portuguese place name, Cunha. This gave rise to the surname Da Cunha, which passed into Spanish as De Acuña.

It seems that the spanish variant could come from Galicia region: Northern Spain. Galician or "Gallego" is a regional language quite similar to Portuguese.
