Acuña
i'm familiar with the origins of my last name to an extent, but i was hoping to gather some clarification.
i know the last name "Acuña" is spanish, and in the spanish language the verb "acuñar" means "to mint coins."
i was wondering if anyone knew anything on a further background and if it's fair to say that the entymology behind that name was in the same way as "Farmer" or "Smith" in that the name dictated a heritage of what the nameholder's profession was. thank you!

Apparently this originated as a Portuguese place name, Cunha. This gave rise to the surname Da Cunha, which passed into Spanish as De Acuña.

It seems that the spanish variant could come from Galicia region: Northern Spain. Galician or "Gallego" is a regional language quite similar to Portuguese.
