meaning and or origin of the name Asphy
My distant Ancestor one Thomas Millsaps (Milsops) married Mary Asphy in County Loughall, Ireland in 1723.

that surname is very difficult, but i've thought of some possibilities myself (didn;t find anything useful on the web):
1) it is a variant of Ashby, which consists of ash = 'the ash-tree' and by = 'town', thus meaning 'ash-tree town'.
2) from the Moroccan placename Asfi, which seems to me very unlikely, but you never know for sure.
3) a variant of Ashfield, but also not the most likely possibility.
