Vietnamese? There is a Vietnamese surname, Vu. Apparently it is Chinese in origin, like a lot of Vietnamese family names. That does not mean that the bearer is of Chinese origin. Vietnam was once under Chinese rule and Chinese names were imposed on some Vietnamese. Vu is from the Mandarin Yu, Cantonese Yi (?). I don't know what it means.

Since you did not list any more family background, it is hard to say. Since my etymology is rarely going to asian roots (like most dictionaries, traced back from where printed to Indo European roots). Based on my study of word origins, I would GUESS it means TO SEE.
