Trying to trace the origin. Part of the family lived in what is now Poland and fled the Russian army to Germany.

Polish, meaning "Little Michael" or "Son of Michael". Michalczyk, I would say, Is the more correct spelling, though there were seven Michalcziks in Poland in 1998. There were, however, nearly a thousand times seven Michalczyks.
