my friend couldnt find her last name in the database. She says it is either irish or swedish but isnt positive.

There are a few families of this name scattered about Ireland, but its origin lies in England. It comes from the Old English eam, which means "uncle". Maybe a name for a person whose only distinction was his relationship to a more important person, or a nickname for an older man.
