Re: Meaning of Cacciaglia
in reply to a message by Lina
Caccia means "hunt", and is an Italian surname. The -aglia ending is difficult. I've always thought of it as pejorative, as in canaglia, "rabble", but the ending of bagaglio, "baggage" looks the same.
A couple of guesses -
1. A place name, though I can't find one.
2. The name of a family that was originally called Caccia, but gained a bad reputation.
3. A nickname for someone who liked garlic, caccia aglio, "hunt garlic".
I have to admit that that last one is a bit silly, and an unlikely explanation.
