Anglo-Norman

Anglo-Norman was a language spoken in medieval England. It was introduced by the Normans, who invaded and conquered England in 1066. The Normans spoke Norman French, a language related to Old French.

For a time Anglo-Norman existed alongside Middle English, being used more by the ruling classes and the law courts. Eventually (starting around the 15th century) it was replaced by English. However, it did make lasting impression on English vocabulary by adding many French loanwords.
