In the field of onomastics the Ukrainian surname Boyko is classified as being of nickname origin. Such names refer to a derivation from a physical characteristic or personal attribute of the first bearer. In this instance, this surname finds its roots in the same term "Boyko", which is the name given to a member of a Slav tribe, the Boykians, who live in Boikivshchyna, the uplands of Stryj and Sambir regions, in Transcarpathia, Western Ukraine. Therefore, this surname originated as a nickname or ethnic name for a Boyko, an inhabitant of that region. However, the possibility can not be excluded that this surname may be of patronymic origin, deriving from the personal name of the father of the initial bearer. In this case, the surname may be derived from the Slavic personal name "Bojslav", being its diminutive form.
