Either (i) from the via del Garbo, the name of a street in Florence that in former times was the place of work of spinners, weavers, etc. of lana del Garbo "wool from the Algarve" in Portugal; or (ii) probably from a medieval Italian nickname for an urbane or well-mannered person (from Italian garbo "polite, kind"). A famous bearer of this surname was Swedish-born US film actress Greta Garbo (1905-1990), original name Greta Gustafsson.
