From Hungarian "juh", sheep, with the occupational suffix. [noted -ed] The origin of juh is unknown, but probably reflects an existing word in use before the Magyar language became standard. Although the Magyar undoubtedly had sheep, shepherding is a lower-status occupation, and older pre-Magyar terminology probably remained in use, just as shepherds in Cambria in England continued to use their own Celtic jargon (distinct from Welsh) well into the 20th C. At least, even though their normal language had been English for several hundred years.
