Meaning & History

Habitational name from any of the numerous places in England so called. Most of them, as for example those in Leicestershire, Lincolnshire (near Gainsborough), Sussex, and West Yorkshire, are named with Old English leac ‘leek’ + tun ‘enclosure’. The compound was also used in the extended sense of a herb garden and later of a kitchen garden. Laughton near Folkingham in Lincolnshire, however, was probably named as loc-tun ‘enclosed farm’ (see Lock).
Variant spelling of Lawton.
