Meaning & History

Derived from the Italian adjective tozzo meaning "squat; stocky" and also "chunk; hunk", both from Latin túndere meaning "to dent" or from Slavic stotz meaning "stump".

It can also derive from Medieval given names like Lutozzo, Albertozzo or from a person named Roberto, Alberto or Dagoberto, whose nickname was actually Tozzo.

A famous bearer is Umberto Tozzi (1952-) an Italian pop and rock singer and composer.
