Meaning & History

Noble and old surname from the province of Biscay in the Basque Country, were it was first recorded. It comes from the roots "lek(h)u" meaning "place", and the ending "barri" which means "new" in the Basque language. Quite literally, "new place", making reference to a powerful duke of Vasconia who during his exile made this his incognito surname, according to the legend.
