Derived from Leeuwen, a former municipality consisting two villages named Beneden-Leeuwen and Boven-Leeuwen (now in the municipality of West Maas en Waal), in the Dutch province of Gelderland. The place name may have derived from Germanic hlaiw meaning "burial mound".
