Meaning & History
Ingleston is an exceptionally rare surname and seems to be posessed by a single family who much grew larger in the 19th century. The surname is topographical and a scarce variant of Ingleton, meanning 'of Ingleton' referring to the parish of Ingleton, North Yorkshire. From where the family is thought to have originated. Individuals bearing the name are very hard to trace before the mid-18th century, with the earliest family member I can identify with this surname being a John Ingleston (c.1716-1794) from Leeds. He bore a son Joseph, born c. 1772 who migrated to Birmingham where the family is still most numerous today.
