[Opinions] Solomon
What do you think of Solomon for a boy born today to a non-Jewish family?
How about use of the nickname Sol (prn: Saul)? Would it be strange or off-putting to some for us to use this name when we are not Jewish?
It's my paternal grandmother's maiden name and I've always liked it, but I worry that it may seem like we're using it as novelty and not giving it the respect the name deserves with its rich history. What do you think?

I don't see anything wrong with a non-Jewish family using the name Solomon; there are plenty non-secular people with Biblical names, and nobody seems to have a problem with that.I kind of like it; it has a dignified feel, but at the same time it doesn't sound pretentious. However, I prefer it as a middle name only.

Solomon is a biblical name and used to be quite a popular one in the UK before the 20th century - much more common than David! I'm not sure where the 'only for Jewish families' thing has come from, but imo, it's just the same as using any other biblical name. And rather nice, if it's a family surname too. Sol is fine as an nn.

I love it! Friends of ours (also non-Jewish) used it for their baby boy in January. Sol is cute, but I like Solo (Saul-o) better.

I love the name Solomon! I don't find it weird for non-Jewish people to use Jewish names. I personally love a wide variety of Jewish names and would have no hesitation in using them at all. Especially nice since it's your paternal grandmother's maiden name.

I don't find it strange or off-putting to see names of any descent (Jewish, Arabic, Japanese, French, whatever) used in families with no link to that heritage. It is done every day and it should be done, in my opinion. No heritage has the sole right to use a name over any other.Solomon used to be a favorite of mine. It has this exotic, strong feeling to it that I really love. Sol is a nice nickname for it. I also like Solo (SAUL-o).

I think Solomon is handsome & a good honest name. I'd love to see it used, and the nickname Sol is cool. I love the sound & feel of Saul, but it has kinda bad connotations, so Sol is an awesome alternative.

I like it. I would definitely use it if it had family history for me. I like Sol as well.

I don't think it's strange to name a child Solomon if you're not Jewish. I think Solomon is a very nice name.
