In addition to previous suggestions - there is a Polish surname Oles, very rare spelt like that. However, in Polish, a diacritical mark can be placed above the S to indicate that it is pronounecd SH. This is a more common name. It is a diminutive of Aleksander, so your ancestor could have been a Pole called Alexander but better known by this less formal version of his baptismal name.
