English surname and place-name, in Cumbria; "valley of the (river) Kent." There's always a possibility of an English surname being adopted by immigrants from the Continent. A foreign surnames which was difficult to pronounce would sometimes be replaced by a similar sounding English surname.

Westmoreland no longer exists, it is part of Cumbria. What is the point of asking the meaninmg of a name if you already know the answer?
