This could well be; I don't know it as a German surname though. I tried the directory of Munich and found 4 persons by that name. No hits in Hamburg, Berlin or Essen. So the Bavaria theses seems to have some basis.
How about Beaver?
I found a surname BAVASTOCK or BAVERSTOCK from a place-name going back to a personal name Babba (Oxford Dictionary of Surnames / OD of Place-names)
