The immediate origin is Polish, as you thought, -owicz being the patronymic ending - "son of". However, this is one of a group of Polish surnames indicating an Armenian ancestry. I don't know what Agops means, but I suspect it could be a version of the Armenian Hagop, meaning Jacob or James.
You might learn more by googling something like "Armenians in Poland".
