I'm all but convinced that McGufford is an alteration of MacGuffog or one of the many variants listed by Black in The Surnames of Scotland. If MacGuffog could be interpreted as McGuffok, Maccoffoc, Macoffoke, MacCuffok, McCoffot, McGuffolk, M'Guffach, and the like, it could certainly have become McGufford.
