It's actually very numerous in Ireland. It's found in the Donnegal-Tyrone-Monaghan region, the Sligo-Roscommon-Galway region as well as the midlands. In Irish, it is Mag Fhloinn from the first name Flann meaning ruddy. It is thought to originate in the Athlone area.
