[Facts] nicknames
i was wondering if someone could point me in the direction of a website or book that will explain how first names come to be shortened. how william turns to bill, how margaret becomes peggy, etc.

I'm afraid I don't know of a source that goes into the origin of nicknames in any depth, but you might be interested in the following listing of English-language nicknames, the most comprehensive I've found (Mike C. was gonna link to this back when but I don't know if he ever did):

A frequently asked question which was originally slated to be added to my FAQ dealt with the way nicknames form, especially unobvious nicknames (eg Bob from Robert ). I scrapped the question because I didn't have a satisfying answer. If anyone has anything to contribute on this topic then please post and I will add to the FAQ.
