As an Irish name, "Kinney" means "descendant of Cionaodh". One reference source I have claims that "Cionaodh" means "the fire-sprung". Another source claims that the name is composed of the elements "cion" (meaning "respect" or "affection") and "Aodh" (the name of a pagan god of fire).-- Nanaea

Your name could be an alternate way of spelling another name. My middle name is Cianaodh, loosely meaning 'the ancient fire'. In Gaelic, Cian means ancient and Aodh means fire. So perhaps your name is related somehow. 'Kin' (as in Kinney) is also a term that is used to describe family so it may have it's origins there.Iain.
