[Surname] Baudelaire
Sorry about posting again this soon but does anyone have any information about the surname Baudelaire? It is one of my ancestors names and they were French (obviously) but I don't know anything else about it.
Thankyou

This surname comes from the name of a weapon, a sort of big culass.
It probably indicates a person who made this weapon or used it.
This surnames has some variants: Badelaire, Bazelair and Bazelaire.
All thi surnames are typical of Northern France but now they are extremely rare.
The surname appears in the French site:

Thanks!
French people should help here, but to me it sounds like "nice to look at". Correct me, if I am mistaken.

Beau would be 'beautiful/handsome', de is 'of' and laire doesn't mean anything I think,
Why did 'Butler' come up as an alternative when I typed in Baudelaire? Butler is maitre d'hotel or something ...

Sorry, I was just guessing wildly. I was thinking of l'air (look, appearance), but this does not go with French grammar, I'm afraid. There seems to be a far better explanation of the name.
