Merit is the only spelling I like. Merrit I can kind of accept, but Meritt, Merritt, and Meret all look ridiculous to me. I'd want to pronunce Meret so that it rhymed with "beret".
Moreover, I prefer Merit on a boy, but it does, of course, work on either sex.
If I remember right, Marit would be MAR-eet or mar-EET. They're not pronunced like Merit.
