[Facts] "Stirling" (Scotish? Celtic? Pictish?) read on....
Having checked this site and it listed as variant of Sterling. This name definately relates to the place name in Scotland, which is older than Middle English. This concerns a name "Sterling Bruce"
So what is the meaning of the place name?

Lots of idea's, i think i favour it was taken from the name of the river, originally known as "Sruth" (meaning stream)upon which it stands (the River Forth). Unless someone known difference....
Thanks for the help, as always appreciated!

Courtesy of Oxford:The placename Stirling is found as Strevelin in 1124, and Sterling in about 1470. Meaning uncertain. The name may originally have been that of the river, now the Forth, on which Stirling stands.Sorry I can't be more specific :-)_____________________________________________________________________"You are never given a wish without also being given the power to make it true."Elinor

Oxford? - I'm afraid I've got a cheap edition of the real thing. My Oxford dictionary of place-names (A.D.Mills 1998) doesn't have Stirling. So what do you have?

I don't know about the meaning but on a 16/17th Century map i've seen of Scotland Stirling is spelt Sterling.(I go to university in Stirling btw)
