I agree with you Miss Claire. How could you name a child before a lot of thought and research goes into it????
My sil did the exact same thing. She named her daughter Rowan. Then she was surprised when no one liked it, she didn't know the meaning of the name at all, it is the name of a state college near here, it's a boy's name, and there are no good nicknames for a girl named Rowan. Everyone was unpleasantly surprised with the name, and she and her husband never discussed the name because they knew they would hear the truth.
