[Surname] Meaning of the surname Pustiens?
Hey all!

My late grandfather's last name was Pustjens, which is a Dutch surname (ofcourse, since I'm from Holland). But while digging further and further in my family tree, the surname was also written as Pustgens, and probably it came from the French surname Pustiens.

I've been searching for the meaning and origin of Pustiens (also of the surnames Pustjens and Pustgens), but I always failed to find it. Now you folks are my last hope. Maybe you are able to tell me what Pustiens means, or what its origins are? I'd be very grateful.

Thank you very much in advance,

Lucille

Groetjes Harry

Dear Lucille,

I know that in the south of France in Paulhiac (nearAuch)there is a family called Pustienne. I assume that this surname is also coming from the Netherlands.
In a paper in the Netherlands once a read an article from a Pustjens searcher, South Limburg, who said that Pustjens is a bastarding from saint Passchier.

Take it for what it is worth.
Nevertheless I am curious from which country you are writing.

Regards,

Thieu Pustjens

Oh, and I forgot something else.....Pustiens was sometimes also written as Postiens and Peustiens.

The 's' at the end of the surname indicates that it's probably a patronymic surname, so maybe the first bearer of the Pustiens surname was someone who was the son of Pustien (?).

Some French male first names end with -ien, like:

Chrétien (= French variant of Christian)
Sebastien (= French variant of Sebastian)
Bastien (= French variant of Bastian)

So maybe Pustien was an existing male first name in the past?

Also, the earliest person with the Pustiens surname that I have on record for so far is Theodorus Pustiens, who was married to Catharina Houben. The birthdate of Theodorus is unknown, but he died on September 28, 1781 in Roosteren (which is a little village in the Netherlands).

Lucille
