[Facts] Re: Pronunciation
Núria NOO-ree-ah. The origin is not Spanish, Núria is a Catalan toponyme, entered like Annuria in the 11th century.
The etymology is unclear:
a) from the Basque N-uri-a, "place between hills";
b) Joan Coromines, a considered linguist, believe that the name comes from Anduria (very close to Andorra): Anduria>Annuria>Núria. The root ando- is an Iberian root which can be related with "mines".The Arabic name Nuriya("luminous, shining")is often confused with Nuria, but in the place of the sanctuary (in the Pyrenees) there aren't Arabic toponymes (the toponymes are of Basque or Iberian origin).
