Can anyone tell me why the name Thomas is described as the 'twin'?

"twin" from Hebrew "te'oma", which comes in turn from Hebrew word "ta'am" which is the root word for "joined together", "twin", etc. Just like "Ruby" is a common word, so would "Te'oma" be to the ancient Hebrews.
