"Sherrod" is a surname, quite common in NC and other parts of the South I've lived in.
It appears to be a corruption of several different names, depending on whether the family was originally English or German.
German: originally Scherertz or Scherer.
English: originally Sherwood
Afraid that's not much help, but at least now you know it's from a surname.
