[Opinions] Alex or Sam?
My husband and I are trying to decide on a name for our little boy. His middle name will be Joel. His first will be Alexander or Samuel but we will call him Alex or Sam. Which do you like better?
Replies
I prefer Sam, though Alex is a little less common here.
Alexander definetely. I like Samuel but I think that Alexander goes better.
Both Alexander and Samuel are handsome classics. It depends on what you want.
If you want a name that is not overly popular, then go for Samuel. It's still popular, but not as much as Alexander. (I haven't checked out the stats recently, but I think that still holds true.)
If you want a name for its overall sound, then I think Alexander Joel flows better than Samuel Joel, since both Samuel and Joel end in an "l" sound.

Samuel hands down. I cannot stand the Alex names in any form (male or female).

I like Samuel better than Alexander, and prefer the nn Sam to Alex. But both Samuel and Joel have the -el ending, that's why I vote against it. I could be a possibility to use simply Sam, but Joel is not long enough for a one-syllabe fn IMHO.
Alexander Joel still rhymes, but I find it nicer all in all.

Alexander: I like the name, although I personally prefer it as a MN. It sounds very nice with the MN Joel though; good combination
Samuel: I love this name. However, I think that the flow is only okay with the MN Joel.
***So, if I had to pick based on the first name alone, I'd go with Samuel (which I like so much more). But if I had to go with the flow, I'd probably say Alexander. But if you don't mind how it flows, then Samuel definitely gmv!

I like both Alexander and Samuel. I think Alexander flows best with Joel (but I don't care for Joel - I don't like the sound of it, and I don't find it masculine). But, I do not think nicknames should be planned by the parents, but instead, should be left up to the child. What if he doesn't want to be called Alex or Sam?
