[Opinions] Karana
Karana's the main character in the book Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell. I was just thinking about it, and Siri's last post prompted me to ask about it. What do you think of the name? The character is a girl who ends up living alone on an island for years. (The real woman was called the Lone Woman of San Nicholas Island, or Juana Maria--her Native name was never known. O'Dell changed her story a bit, but it remains pretty similar at the core.) I sort of idolized her when I was growing up; I played that I was Karana and built a house with a whale-bone fence and took care of my (imaginary) dog, Rontu. My main question isn't really whether or not you all like the name. (As you could probably guess, it doesn't really matter much to me.) I'm mainly curious as to whether you think it would suit better as a first or a middle name. If you have any suggestions of combos, I'd appreciate it. Array

I think it would be fine as either. I didn't realize that book was based on a skeleton of a real story.

It would be fine in today's world as a first name.If asked about it, she can provide a story. Instead of saying "my ma lik'd it, she thought it was kewl an' differn'. It don't have no meanin'"Karana Isobel springs to mind.Siri

I like Karana. It looks like it could be a variant of Katherine (like Karina, Kara, Karen, etc.), so, though it's still unusual, it's got a usual enough sound to work as either a fn or a mn.As a mn, I think it'd flow best with either a one-syllable fn or a three-syllable with stress on the first syllable:
Eloise Karana
Jane Karana
etc.As a fn, I think it would flow best with either a one-syllable mn or a two-syllable with stress on the second syllable.
Karana Marie
Karana Joyce
etc.Shannon

I think it's pretty, but in my eyes it looks like a typo of Karina. I prefer Karina, really, but Karana would be nice as a middle name. If you were to use it for a child, I think it would be neat to tell your daughter about the character you used to play when you were younger.  ·•·Eliza·•·
