Karana's the main character in the book Island of the Blue Dolphins by
Scott O'Dell. I was just thinking about it, and
Siri's last post prompted me to ask about it. What do you think of the name?
The character is a girl who ends up living alone on an island for years. (The real woman was called the
Lone Woman of
San Nicholas Island, or
Juana Maria--her Native name was never known. O'Dell changed her story a bit, but it remains pretty similar at the core.) I sort of idolized her when I was growing up; I played that I was Karana and built a house with a whale-bone fence and took care of my (imaginary) dog, Rontu.
My main question isn't really whether or not you all like the name. (As you could probably guess, it doesn't really matter much to me.) I'm mainly curious as to whether you think it would suit better as a first or a middle name. If you have any suggestions of combos, I'd appreciate it.
