While I've never heard of "Maud" being generally accepted as a masculine first name anywhere, there are other surnames like "Madison" which were derived from the mother's name. One which springs quickest to mind is the surname "Alison" or "Allison" (which is also used as a feminine first name), meaning "son of Alice".
Examples of surnames derived from the mother's occupation would include "Baxter" (a female baker) and "Webster" (a female weaver).
