[Surname] Garcia
DH has long loed the idea of using the surname Garcia as a fn (we do have a family friend by that name, but I suspect that the real reason is that he thinks it sounds cool with our last name).I've been looking to find some info on it, and on a few name sites I've seen it referred to as meaning "mighty with a spear" or some such. I suspect this is hooey, and I see that its listed here of indeterminate origins. Can anyone confirm the total hooeyness of "mighty with a spear" or have any other info on the name?

i found searching in Spanish two other meanings: one is "el oso de llanura" (bear of the plateau) and the other "peñascal" (place covered with big and high rocks). Both don't show any backing information. It is even doubted if it is Basque or not. I found, though, that it is stated as patronymic, meaning it is a firstname as well. Not used as such frequently anymore, though. Finally, there is a site saying it is from Hortza, Artza or Hartze, which supposedly means "príncipe de vista agraciada" (prince of the gracious view). Confusing, all in all.
