Originates from central europe:
Czech, Slovak and Polish (version: Stanislawa)
male version: Stanislav / Stanislaw
Short/nick-names:
Stana (pronounced stanya - with accent on the first a)
Stasha (more prevalent in poland)
Stania (my personal version, see Stana)
Slava (more commonly used by males, but not restricted to)
I don't know what the first root of the name means although some speculate it is derived from the latin word for star.
Slava: is a slavic (Slovak and Czech specifically from my knowledge)word in modern times meaning Glory or triumph - even "pomp".
Slav is the word for a race of people - the Slavic race.
The name couldeven possibly be derived from the word "slovo" meaning "word"...the root word that inspired the whole nation of Slovakia (a nation of the spoken word).
I am certain there are more variations on the name as well as possible meanings. But one is is for certain, it is of Slavic origin.
