I dislike it. It's a fad name, and if not for the sound-similar Alison it would be inexcusably mannish. Besides, it makes me think of "addlebrained." Overall it's as acceptable as Madison to me, which is fairly so, simply because the similarity of sound to Alison makes it passable on a female person.

So, if you want to avoid trendy, avoid Addison. It's the Brittany of this decade. If trendy doesn't bother you, there is still the association with a disease (reasonably well known thanks to the popular medical dramas), the (apparenty likeable) character on Grey's Anatomy, and the ambiguous gender (granted the extraordinary popularity of the name for girls probably overcomes that in the US. In Canada, the UK and elsewhere in the world people would have more trouble).

I'll admit that my tastes run to the more timeless types of names- so I like Adele, Adelaide and Adeline. Your mns are lovely in themselves- Jane and Claire are two of my favourites, because they are feminine, strong and timeless. Jane is in fact the least common/popular name on the whole list (#478). Charlotte is # 123 and Claire is #86. Danielle is #116, but given its incredible popularity from the 70s to the 90s, it feels older and more common (and your daughter may be assumed to be older than she is later on...).

Mostly because I really liked the character on Grey's Anatomy, even though I rarely watch that show. Also, my 8th grade English teacher named her daughter this, and from what I know of her, she's a pretty cool kid. It helps that said English teacher is one of my favorite people ever, too. :D

ETA: Though you might be warned that Addison has seriously jumped in popularity since 2005, surely in part as an alternative to Madison. If you're concerned about your daughter having to go by Addison B. in school, or whatever, this probably isn't the best name to choose. I can imagine that it'll get confused with Madison a ton, too. You probably already know all that, but I just thought I'd point it out. :)

Addison on a girl (this spelling ONLY) is ok, as long as the parents (in this case you) realize that the name means Son of Adam, and decide that this doesn't matter to them. Meanings are very important to me, but I realize that they don't have the same importance to everyone else, so if the meaning doesn't bother you then I fully support the use of Addison on a girl. It's when parents are in denial about the meaning and the names masculine origins that it bugs me.

Unlike most of the people on this board, I love Addison on a girl, and it is on my top five list. The only concern for me is the rise in popularity, but if that does not bug you, go for it. A lot of people here will tell you to use more "traditional" names to get the same nickname, but they obviously have a different naming style than you if you are considering Addison. Go with what you like, and think will work in your family.

I also suggest using the spelling Addison, rather than trying to make the name more feminine. With the number of girls named Addison, it will be considered a girl's name anyway (much like Madison).

I love the nickname Addie, but I agree with everyone else about Addison. It's not particularly ugly, I don't think, but there are a million other reasons not to choose it. Besides, if you add up all the different spellings of Addison up, it's really the most popular name of 2006 by far. Addison is my favorite spelling though. Adelaide is probably the best alternative I think, although Adele is nice and hasn't been suggested.

I really dislike it, both on a boy or girl. If you check the popularity charts for Addison, it's going up at a huge rate in the US, especially for girls. It's a surname, and an ugly one at that. Not to mention she'd be confused with all the other Addison's and Madison's running around.

When it comes to the "boys' names on girls" issue, I have a live and let live attitude, but Addison is one I would avoid simply because of its sudden celebrity. Adelaide, Adeline, Adella, Adelle, or Adelia would all give you the Addy nn while giving your daughter a chance to be unique.

Truthfully and honestly I think its horrible trendy and boringly surnamey, Its a name where the bearer will be forever Addison Initial of surname because of the incredibly explosion of little Addison's last year, at least in America where it rose a mind boggling 79 places.
I dont like this name on a boy or girl but would prefer to see it on a boy personally.
