[Opinions] Carys
Would love hearing opinions on these questions . . . .
What do you think of the name Carys?
If you were unfamiliar with the name, how would you assume it would be pronounced? (I know how it is supposed to be prounounced, but want to gauge what kind of mispronunciations are risked. Am specifically worried about whether people would pronounce it "Carries").
What stereoptypes does the name bring up for you?
Do you think it's a name that other children would easily think of a way to make fun of?
Thanks for your sharing your thoughts!

Dislike it.
I may be the only person on this board who doesn't like it, but I will stick firmly by my opinion.
Phonetically, I don't like it because I pronounce it CARE-iss in my head, and I'm really sick of the sound Care involved in anything. Especially in names, and ESPECIALLY in female names. Car is like a tired version of Care to me, and it's almost worse. I don't like how it looks, especially the y in it. It looks incomplete and made up to me, even though I know it's completely legitimate. Umm the only other reason I can think of is a dumb one and I can't even begin to articulate it.
I'm pretty unfamiliar with it I guess, I've only seen it on this board. I've always pronounced it CARE-iss (or KERR-iss, which in my accent is about the same.) Never -eez or even -ees.
The stereotype it brings up to me is the same mother who names her child Coreigh instead of Cory or Corey because it's "the Irish spelling." This is completely unfair of course, since Carys is perfectly legitimate.
Don't think anyone would make fun of it, any more than they'd make fun of any other name.

I like it as a MN.
I adore Carys
It's such a lovely name. I know how to prn. it, can't think of any other way. The prn. to me seems obvious, but then I did grow up with a Carys so it's kind of embedded by now.
It's just such a gorgeous name. I can't see any obvious ways that kids can tease from it, and I think kids, if they want to, will find a way to tease someone no matter what name they have.
I *heart* Carys.

I've never actually met someone named Carys, but it's fairly normal and acceptable. I honestly am not certain of the correct pronounciation, and my first guess would be CARE-ees (I'm pronouncing the last syllable completely different from the last syllable of carries, but I'm not exactly sure how to write it. I guess for me it kind of rhymes with lease or the -eese- in Reeses, if that makes any sense). It's quite pretty, and I don't think it would be made fun of at all.
I think that Carys is a wonderful name! It is rich in Welsh culture, very rare yet beautiful, and even though it's a short name, I picture a girl named this having strength, determination, or will-power. I feel it has some majestic qualities, and sort of a medieval-ish style, as sometimes I picture a Welsh princess or other important female with this name sake. I know it is was pronounced KAR-is, but considering it's rarity, I can assume that possible mispronunciations might include Carries OR CAR-ees. This actually doesn't bring up any stereotypes for me, maybe because it is under-used, but if I had to pick one, then maybe drama-queen? But not likely. I personally don't know how any kids could make fun of a name like this, since there are not (or I haven't realized) any fowl words, slang, etc. connected to it. So I say, go name your daughter Carys, it's beautiful!
I like the name very much! I used to babysit for a beautiful baby girl named Carys. :) I can see how some people might pronounce it as care-ees (with stress on either syllable) but I think that most people will be able to easily pronounce it. Since it's not a very common name where I live (the Carys I mentioned before is the only one I know!) it doesn't have any strong stereotypes attached to it, IMO. In combos, my favorite is Carys Amelia. The only thing I might be wary of is other people shortening it to Carrie. Otherwise, a lovely name!
I think its a pretty name. I pronounce it ka-reese.
Carys is nice name. It´s Welsh name
I like the name Carys. I think it's a sweet, underused name that will age well. I pronounce it "care iss", and I don't really think "Carries" will be an issue.
I think Carys is lovely and wish it would become more popular in the US. I've never heard the name pronounced, but I would assume it's pronounced like CARE-iss. I don't have any stereotypes about Carys and I can't think of any teasing nicknames that would come from it. Have no doubt, though, if little Carys is unpopular enough, someone will find a way to make fun of her name. :( If she's popular, her name could be Brunhilda and her classmates would still be okay with it (not really, but you get my point). :D
It just makes me think of that actress, what's her name, from Wales.
It's a pretty name. I like it and think it's perfectly usable.

Carys is "KA-riss" to me. When I first came across it, it was "KA-riss" to me, not "CAIR-iss". But it's like Cara were a lot of Americans seem to go for the very 'r' sounding "CAIR-ra", when it's always been "CAH-ra" to me and all the Caras I have ever met.
I have never considered it as a plural form of Cary to get "carries", but then I have never met or come across a Cary.
Stereotype: It's like the trendy Welsh name to me. I would go Angharad or Anchoret over Carys.
If kids want to make up names they will. I would not discard a name just because of names that 'might' be though up.

agreed...
and may I also add, people in Wales thought of it as an old woman name (kind of like Ethel) until it was reborn by celebrity usage.

I enjoy it.
I would pronounce it care-ys. It's a lovely name, with a great meaning. I don't really have any stereotypes about it. I'd use it.
