Fitzwilliam is "son of William", if I'm recalling correctly. Similarly, Fitzpatrick and Fitzgerald are sons of Patrick and Gerald, and Fitzroy is the son of the king. According to Behind the Surname, they're derived from Anglo-Norman French.Array
