[Opinions] Kate?
I had a multi-paragraph rant on my feelings on this name, but there's really no reason for that. To sum: this isn't a name I'm considering using, but a name I'm considering liking. Katie and Maddie are generally considered the ultimate yucky trendy cutesy names, and I concur. But I met a Kate who bore her name quite well this summer (she was an adult, too), and am now in Taming of the Shrew, which includes a strong and dynamic Kate. Also, my unfortunatly-named cousin Kaitlyn is causing me to love the alternative of Kate (and I refuse to call her anything else...which works out well as she prefers Kate too). But I'm just not sure how I feel about the name. What do you think of Kate?(ETA: I thought I'd mentioned I only like Kate as a nickname and preferably for Kathertine, but I realised I didn't. Oops. I agree with those of you who responded that it should be a nickname.)

I like Kate as a nickname. The only Kates I've ever known have been strong and intelligent, unlike a lot of Katies I've met. And the Taming of the Shrew character gives the name some stronger backing too. To me Kate isn't cutesy and trendy like Katie at all. It's more classic and strong. I really like it spelled Cate or Cait, and I would consider using Catherine, and that would probably be the nickname I'd go with.

Love it. But it needs a rest. It's the least we can do for a loved one. :-)I do use it for a mn quite a lot, though. She doesn't have to do as much heavy lifting from there.

a strong sounding name...too many of them right now, though.

I love Kate, but only as a nickname, preferably for Katherine.I consider it to be a strong, feminine classic.

I love Kate (and Katie) as nicknames for Katherine.

I like Kate (lol). I wish people would call me that in real life. Everyone calls me Katy, and it's starting to feel really juvenile to me.

I agree on liking Kate as a nickname; I prefer Katelyn or Katherine.
I really like Katie or Caitie.I know a girl named Katelyn who usually goes by Kate; no one really ever refers to her as Katelyn.I also have a friend Kaitlyn, who we call Kait, but I don't know if it's really a nickname or kind of just like 'Hey Kait, guess what?!' So overall, I like the name a lot, but I have the same opinion -- it's great as a nickname but I like a longer name better as the real fn.

Kate is my mn. I like the fact that it's short, sweet and classic. I don't see anything wrong with Kate as a full name to be honest, I don't see why it has to be used as a nn, when it's a perfectly fine and classic name.

I adore Katherine "Kate". It's classy and pretty and just all-around lovely.

It's okay on its own, but I agree that it seems nicer with a full name. I adore Kathryn with the nickname Kate.

It's perfectly fine as a nn, and is possibly one of the nns which are ok even for an adult or in professional environment. I'm ok with Katie and Maddie as well if used as nns, preferably for young children, but they make really poor full names.

Kate is a nice nn for Katherine or Kathleen. Kaitlin is too cutesy.

My eldest dd is Katherine (nn Kate) so obviously, I really like it. I strongly prefer Kate as a nn also. I will say, however, that all Kate names need a serious rest. My dd has always had between six and eight Katies/Kates in her grade. Of course, most of them have been formally named Katelyn and Kaitlin, etc., but it doesn't matter. This name is everywhere.
