I agree on liking Kate as a nickname; I prefer Katelyn or Katherine.
I really like Katie or Caitie.
I know a girl named Katelyn who usually goes by Kate; no one really ever refers to her as Katelyn.
I also have a friend Kaitlyn, who we call Kait, but I don't know if it's really a nickname or kind of just like 'Hey Kait, guess what?!'
So overall, I like the name a lot, but I have the same opinion -- it's great as a nickname but I like a longer name better as the real fn.
