About the boy named Sinon, it makes me think "Roman Mythology, much?" because an important character in the second book of Vergil's "Aeneid" is a man named Sinon, pron. "SIGH-nuhn".

I don't know whether you've read LOTR (you told me you haven't read HP), but I just thought I'd mention that Strider was the Ranger name by which Aragorn / King Elessar was known among the hobbits, at least before his true identity was revealed. If I had to guess I'd attribute use of Strider as a name to LOTR.
Along the same vein, the young X-man (well, X-girl) Rogue's real name is Marie; my assumption would be that that was the inspiration for that baby's name.
At least both sources are heroic.

That doesn't make it any better.
It probably doesn't mean much to the girl who loves Martha, Abigail, Thomas, John, George, Dot, Louis, Johanna, Anthony, Oscar, Cecily, Basil, Ernest, and on and on because of books, musicals, or favourite historical figures...but those are all real names! Real names that I like based on their sound and value as a name, and not just because of the good association. Rogue and Strider are definetly not improved for me just because Mommy and Daddy wanted to name their kid after LOTR or X-Men. I know I'm a snob but to be frank, that seems more immature than anything else.

Heroic is in the eye of the beholder - and just what *is* "value as a name"?
The fact that some here don't approve of the source doesn't make those names less heroic. I chose Alexander and Gideon because they are heroic to me, and I'd venture to say plenty of people here and otherwhere agree with me. But I also find Aragorn, Elessar, and yes, Strider, heroic, regardless of how few people might agree with me.

Apologies. What I really meant by "value as a name" was, if it wasn't for the character, would I want my child to be named this? If Thomas Jefferson had never existed/1776 had never been written, would Thomas sound like a good name to me? Yes. It would. But watching that musical made me like it initially, and the Jefferson association makes me smile.
It's picking something for (seemingly, seemingly!) no reason but a nice association that seems odd to me. Would Strider sound nice to you if it wasn't for Aragorn?
I personally don't find those characters as heroic as you do, especially Rogue...probably because I'm not familiar with X-Men (I've seen the movies, so I understand who we're talking about) and because honestly, I'm a snob. (Also: "heroic" isn't top criteria for me. Just a personal thing, same as "unique" or "feminine" or "exotic" or what-have-you.)

I would never have considered Eve if not for V for Vendetta. I may well have come to Evening anyway (they share top billing on my favourites, though Eve is more a backup-in-case-my-spouse-just-doesn't-get-it kind of choice, if you get what I mean), but Eve? I probably wouldn't have given it a second thought. But give me a film that moves me, a comic book that makes me think about the natures of freedom, happiness, anarchy, and truth, give me a woman of immense strength of character, and the sound begins to appeal more. It's a bit like Stockholm Syndrome--I hear the name often enough, associated with something I love a great deal, and I see more in the name than simply "a nice association."

For me it's more a question of the general impression the names give and how obvious the reference is. I've heard of a medieval philosophy professor who named his kids Abelard and Heloise. The reference is very highbrow, but it's a very infortunate sibset for various reasons (naming siblings after lovers, naming a son after a man who was castrated, giving him a name that for many will sound ugly and strange). I find this name just as bad as something from a hyped popular culture source.
So for me, it's not a question of high-brow or low-brow, but of how the name will be seen in general, since the child won't interact only with its parents. Some of the names Array listed might be unusual, but the graphic-novel association is not too blatant, especially as these graphic novels are a bit more obscure. On the other hand, names like Othello, Abelard, Strider and Rogue Marie all feel cumbersome and limiting, and give the idea that the kids' parents were rather obsessive, and this is going to be more obvious if the name comes from a super-hyped source such as LotR or Harry Potter.
And as concerns "heroism" being subjective, well, there have been people who named their kids Benito, Stalino or Lenina because these names matched their personal criterion of heroic.

My concern is exactly that the parents will come off as obsessed, and the child will bear the brunt of that...especially when the name's heavy and not too name-like in the first place. (Such as Rogue.)
