Piggybacking off Siri's post...

I mentioned in my response to her post that I love the nickname Peggy for Margaret. What do you think of it?

Also, do you think Teddy and Peggy are too close to use in a sibset?

I actually don't mind Peggy at all, I think it's quite cute. I do think Teddy and Peggy are a little too similar though.

Peggy

I'm sorry but I absolutely despise the nickname Peggy. My friend and I used to have old lady nicknames for eachother, I was Peggy "Peg" and she was Betty. Peggy and especially Peg sound like old unattractive fat women. The name has almost a humorous quality to it now for me.

I love Margaret nn Peggy. I had a great aunt by that name (Jean's sister).

Teddy and Peggy are a little cutesy as a sibset. For me, it'd work fine if Margaret was Peggy most of the time, but Theodore was only Teddy when you needed a cute nickname.

Oh wow, what a great sibset--Margaret and Jean. Are you the one with the grandparents named Jean and Paul? My grandparents are named Jean and Paul, too. Actually, their names are Thomas Paul and Lois Jean, but they go by their middle names. And my grandmother, Jean, has a sister named Margaret, but she goes by Jackie (her middle name is Jacqueline).

Yup, mine are Jean and Paul - Jean Patricia and Paul Georg.

Jean's sibset is:

Edith Margaret "Peggy"
Mary Kathleen "Molly"
Richard Norman "Norman"
Jean Patricia "Jean"
Ronald Johnstone "Ronnie"

Their mother was Edith Mary - fn and mn but used as a double fn - hence Peggy and Molly's names.

That's my mom's name

And it's not short for Margaret, just Peggy. She's had to explain this to people throughout her life. I can't really see it on anyone else because it's my mom's name and it's not that common of a fn or nn. I don't think Teddy and Peggy are too close for a sibset, as long as their names are Theodore and Margaret or something. Since those aren't close at all.

I really think nn's are open choice - as long as the child doesn't hate it, then it doesn't matter. You could use Dancer as a nn for Margaret for all I care. It's not the legal name, so it's just for fun.

I personally don't like Peggy, because I don't generally like p and g sounds, and it's too much like the word "peg", which has connotations of limitations. (as slang, "to peg someone" means to classify or fix, and there's the phrase "to take someone down a peg")

I don't think Teddy and Peggy are too close, after all they're just nn's and probably wouldn't be used all the time by everyone.

One thing that worries me about the nickname Peggy is that people will shorten it even further to Peg, which has various connotations. But I can look on the bright side and think of the song my grandmother loves so much, 'Peg O'My Heart'. :)

I've always liked Peggy, since I was a little girl. I think Peggy and Teddy sound fine together.

I love Peggy ... I'm probably influenced mostly by a girl I grew up with (she was my older sister's age) who was unusually named Peggy, and the song "Peggy Sue." I don't think it's dated because I have never known any other Peggys except this one girl, who was really nice, smart, tall and pretty... in fact she was my sister's best friend & also her rival.

Teddy, on the other hand, does seem dated to me ... although about the right date to be fashionable rather than frumpy.

I love the song 'Peggy Sue', too. I can't quite bring myself to use Sue, but Peggy just seems so darling. I'm trying to think of other famous people/songs/characters called Peggy, but I can't think of any!

Love it. I always liked it, but now my sister-in-law Peggy has made me love it. It fits in with the WWII era names that I'm starting to really love.

As long as it's a nn and not a full name, Peggy gets my enthousiastic thumbs up. :-)

It's great to have a good association with a name. I know it really helps in its likability factor.

No, I wouldn't use Peggy as the formal name. I'd go with Margaret. More specifically, Margaret Ellen.

Peggy's cute, although I can't help but think it might be a little dated as a nn for Margaret. It goes nicely with Teddy, I think. They're not too close for siblings.

It's sweet, but it has this undertone of violence to me. I can't help but associate the name with "Peggy-O" as sung by Simon & Garfunkel, and while it's a fabulous little song, it ends with a threat of burning Peggy-O's town. :P And so something about the name sounds sinister for me.

Teddy and Peggy aren't too close for my tastes. I think they're cute.

It really is a beautiful song--I can send you a copy sometime, if you like--but it's just...sinister to me. Despite the upbeat tempo and the pleasant harmonies and the fact that it's not really Peggy's fault. D:
